My students are champions! They have a variety of disabilities, and many of them do not talk, but they are great at communicating love and happiness. They are also students first, and we truly are a Community of Learners.
These students are hard workers and eager to help their peers and adults in the classroom. They love to dance and perform, and when they are able to show their talents to the rest of the school they shine. Disabilities can't keep them down.
Four years ago when I started at Marshall High School the PE teacher asked me to put together a group of cheerleaders from my class to support the Special Olympics sports teams at Marshall. We learned a cheer and did it at every game. I sewed cheerleading skirts and bought shirts on discount from Old Navy. These uniforms have served us well, been passed from student to student as some graduate, but they are now threadbare and stained. We need new uniforms.
We are not the greatest dancers, we have difficulties with focus and rhythm, we sing off tune, we sometimes are too overwhelmed to practice or perform, but more than any team you'll ever meet:
WE HAVE HEART.
We play bigger than anyone. We have style. We help each other through every moment. We are louder (sometimes). We love each other.
There's a big district-wide Cheerfest for Cheerleading Teams like ours coming up in May. We're working daily on our routine. We participated the last couple of years, and this year we'd like to return with official uniforms. We need your help.
Our goal is to get enough uniforms to last us for many years, as students come and go from the school. This money will cover all the uniforms we need this year and for years to come.
