Kurt's Medical Fund

With the 'go ahead' with Kurt and Robin, I wanted to share some details of what Kurt is going through. A couple months ago, Kurt had surgery to remove a cancerous lesion on his pancreas. The surgery went well, however not long afterwards he developed an abdominal infection. Unfortunately, the infection progressed to sepsis and an abscess formation in his abdomen. The abscess was drained and he started long term antibiotic therapy. To complicate matters even worse, Kurt has a cardiac pacemaker and needs to be on long term anti-arrhythmics (medicine to keep his heart beating in sync) and life long anti-coagulation (medicine to keep his blood super thin to prevent blood clots). Being on these medications is risky enough, however, undergoing major surgery using involves stopping/reducing these medications, and that is an even greater risk for Kurt. Kurt was actually doing better and was discharged home with PICC line and 24 hour antibiotics. Everyone was beginning to feel some sense of hope because Kurt seemed to be doing better. Not long after discharge, Kurt became lethargic, feverish, and started to have discharge from his surgery sight. He developed even more abscesses and became septic once again. When it rains, it pours - and Kurt started having problems with his cardiac pacemaker including a lead wire becoming fractured. Kurt was readmitted and went through even more procedures. He has been in the hospital since. His abscess formed a fistula and the medical team is hoping that powerful antibiotics and IR drainage will close the fistula. The only surgical option would include colostomy placement and, for obvious reasons, they want to avoid that at all costs. Kurt was placed on TPN (basically all nutrition being placed in his veins to bypass his GI system. He has lost 40lbs. He is one the strongest people I know, but right now he is weakened and needs our help. Robin has been a saint by sacrificing all her free time and career caring for Kurt and Rylee. She has had to take off work for a long period of time to keep the family together, and she too needs our help. Even if you don't know Kurt, please consider helping this amazing family out. Kurt has always been the person to help others. Whether it's through his role as a Fireman, an EMT, an ED Tech, or just being a great father/husband/friend. Let's be the first on scene for him and his family. Let's help the guy who helps others first.
