I didn't want to reach out to you in this way, but I need your help. I have lived in my zip code for almost 50 years, as a dynamic resident, volunteer producer at WBAI Radio, a poll worker trainer elections day operations district monitor for NYC Board of Elections.
I am not willing to leave this apartment that overall, until lately, has been a safe environment and has contributed greatly to my existence. As a 68 year old black woman, dual-diagnosed with medical conditions requiring special needs assistance from NYC Dept.of Social Services. I have advocated for access to healthcare services ,policies , and educational services for my entire career. I am now being harassed by my landlord and threatened with eviction. I need to raise $6000 by the end of April to clear my bills and start fresh. After living in the same apartment for almost 25v years, my landlord has declared my 68 year old self a health hazard to the building and the neighbors. We have been in court for almost this past year.Sadly for me, my community has become the hottest neighborhood in Brooklyn, and my rent stabilized apartment is in very high demand, even with the outdated infrastructure that can't demand market rate in its current state and to get market rate for this apartment is to dislocate me and other long standing tenants, and renovate for a tenant willing to pay for the upgrades. Tenants pay for heat and water. But if the ground floor businesses blow a fuse, most tenants have no power. If the renovate is shut off for renvation purposes, we have no water. All of our utility meters are located at a different address making the system subject to secrecy and reliability.
Over the years, I have had two offices I worked from: WBAI Radio, which downsized and moved after Hurricane Sandy and Bed-Stuy Legal Services Corp,(bringing all my office equipment into my studio apartment) which lost its Ryan White HIV program funding, thereby the choice to eliminate my position as Co-Director of Community Education & Outreach that provided education training to People Living with HIV, organizations and others to access civil rights and other legal services needs. As an advocate, Public Health Advisor, Trainer and Consultant in this field of public health since the beginning of the epidemic, I interacted with legislators, community leaders, medical/social services providers, and others responsible for addressing the HIV epidemics in agencies serving mutual clients. I have been recognized with achievement awards in prevention planning and assisting in the the development of new service agencies.
Retiring at 62, I began receiving MEDICAID. At 65, I was enrolled in MEDICARE, maintaining my manged cared provider, HealthFirst, I was assured that MEDICAID would transfer my health insurance to MEDICSRE to pay my health insurance, but it has not done so for the past three years. I keep getting request to pay late hospital bills. Social services workers nor case manages effectively transferred my case information from one program to another so $135 has be deducted automatically form my SSA monthly check for the last 38 months. That $5200+ almost matches the amount that I need for rent arrears, which is why I am engaging and requesting the GoFundMe when I go to court with my landlord to avoid eviction,. I have contacted HRA. MEDICAID, MEDICARE, and SSA to coordinate their records through a fair hearing process, but since each is individualized, it has taken much longer than I though due to the high volume and backlogs in the systems. I don't have time to wait. I have had to choose which bills to pay along with paying back slowly those individuals who have helped me in the past. Will these agencies come through in time? Will those who I have help return the favor?
Meanwhile the following has been happening in my apartment: 1. no refrigerator since August, 2.the stove and burners have to be lit with a match, 3.plumbing in the bathroom gets clogged, has overflowed from other apartments, into to my studio apartment damaging clothing, books, important documents, equipment that I have maintained and treasure over the years. The quasi handyman gets called in only to delay the actual use of a proper licensed worker, 4. corroded old brass piping in the sink, led to water damaged on old wooden cabinets 5. my doorbell/intercom has not worked in year 6. a new thermostat needs to be put in 6. regular extermination services so that rodents, that travel due to construction in the area, don't continue to visit.
My living situation was not helped by a bicycle accident that had me slam into a parked car in order to avoid oncoming traffic, allowing the handle bar to shogun me in my left breast, leaving me with a slight concussion, chest bruising and a hematoma initially the size of a papaya, that then required breast surgery, I also late had eye surgery. I was on bed rest and restricted movement for the most part of a year or more.
I did get some work in 2018, some paid on time, some didn't...some not at all and I have filed accordingly. I provided besides my professional training audio/video/photography services to document the work of many a agency. Often the rates are much lower, adding to by charitable nature. Where my labor had been stole or misrepresented in terms of length of time, I have contacted the agencies. But Unemployment in NY sanctions false claims at 4 times the rate, so I had to certify for benefits for 29 weeks, but did not get paid for them. So I lost half my benefits.
I need to raise this $6000 immediately, by the end of April. So those reading this, I hope will come through.I have filed for redress by I really need my friends now. So of you have already assisted me and to those I have paid my slowly, my apologies because I thought it would happen on time. I will be happy to work for your assistance and repay with my services. Thank goodness that my military and camping background enhanced my survival. But I cannot in all good conscience give up my apartment, because in the end I have paid to live here.
If you didn't know, my name means "one who is helpful" a characteristic which I will never change,;it is the characteristic of my life.
Thank you so much for your consideration(s).
