Hope for Brooklyn Rex

Brooklyn Rex is the daughter of my friend from highschool. Here is a bit about their story ( you can learn more at http://www.brooklynrex.com/our-story/)

Brooklyn Harper Rex was born 2 March 2013. She was premature at 34 weeks, after trying to come into this world a month earlier. It was evident from the start that she was a strong little princess.

At the precious age of 14 months, in May 2014, Brooklyn was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). The road up until that point was long but nothing like the journey we're on to save our baby girl.

Brooklyn’s first sign of illness appeared at 8 months old, in November 2013, with an urticaria like rash that would come and go, usually appearing in the afternoons and gone by the following morning. After seeing several specialists we were told that it was highly likely to be an allergic reaction to something. Brooklyn fell ill again in December 2013 with RSV bronchiolitis and was admitted to hospital. We noticed that she would battle to recover when contracting any respiratory virus. In February 2014 Brooklyn was admitted to hospital with rotavirus (despite being vaccinated against this). All this time her rash would still appear almost daily.

Three weeks after her first birthday she developed an unexplained fever. At first we suspected it was teething but 40+ days later the fever was still present. She would have a fever twice a day and it was resistant to NSAIDs such as Panado and Ibuprofen. Brooklyn was hospitalized for two months in isolation. She was tested for diseases such as Lymphoma, Leukaemia, tumours, Lupus, and others as well as being treated for Kawasaki disease. Once she did not respond to treatment she was referred to a Paediatric Haematologist, who then diagnosed Brooklyn with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)

We have faced many mountains these last few months… and we continue to face them. We have almost lost Brooklyn several times, been homeless* (because it was initially thought that Brooklyn had contracted an infection in the residence we were living in) and helpless, jobless (both of us being retrenched in the past 2 months), felt the sting of trusting people to have Brooklyn’s best interest at heart but didn’t and many other battles we keep close to our hearts.

However, nothing surmounts to the mountains Brooklyn is faced with daily. She has had the toughest journey imaginable. We are so thankful for the genuine people that care for our baby girl and take the time out to support our family on this journey.
