"Help young trans father after OHIP drags it's heels."
My trans son, Kip, finally had surgery earlier this Feb. He has been off work since July, 2014. His Employment Insurance ran out in Nov, 2014 (a maximum of 15 weeks coverage is offered for sickness). Until the doctors determined the cause of his abdominal pain, they didn't want him to go to work - his job puts him at risk with violent clients. After seeing doctor after doctor after doctor, and being tested, scoped, CT scanned, x-ray'd... and tested again, it was determined that, in addition to several possible complicating factors, one of his ovaries had to come out.
Because Kip is a man, OHIP said they wouldn't cover the removal of an ovary - it is not on the list for male surgeries. Every Canadian should receive an equal opportunity to health care. But Kip's surgeon had to fight for his right to this operation. The appeal took weeks and weeks. He was told he could return to work if he performed only light duties, but his job is very physical and no light duties were available. He has been sick with worry over piling up bills and his emptying bank account. An operation that could have happened in Nov was not scheduled until Feb. Again, his EI ran out beginning of Nov and he cannot return to work until mid-March. He qualified for no other financial support. Almost five months with no income.
He is a happily married, hard working young man with a beautiful baby who just turned one. This young family has struggled with an unfair financial situation needlessly because OHIP dragged its heels. I am asking that anyone who would like to help this young family, please do so here. No donation is too small. Every $10 donated will help Kip provide support to his family. And please share their story! The more people it reaches, the better chance a young man who was treated with indifference and a lack of compassion can regain his financial security again. Thank you.
