A Hastings home sustained major damage this morning due to a fire.

Hastings firefighter/paramedics were called to the home, located in the 700 block of Pine Street, at 2:09 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19. Upon arrival, they found the home full of smoke with flames visible in the kitchen, said Fire and EMS Director Mike Schutt.

The fire spread from the kitchen into the dining room and living room, as well as into the walls, second floor and attic.

The six residents were home at the time of the fire and woke up when the smoke alarms sounded.

"Smoke detectors get a lot of credit for saving lives this morning," Schutt said.

Hastings got help with the fire from Hastings police, the Miesville Fire Department, the Prescott, Wis., Fire Department, and later on from the Cottage Grove Fire Department.

The extra aid helped firefighters manage the blaze in the cold weather, which makes the physical work of fighting fires even more strenuous.

"It's taxing, not only on the firefighters, but on the equipment as well," Schutt said.

Hastings also responded to an emergency medical situation during the fire.

The family will be displaced for some time due to the extent of damage at the home. The Red Cross is assisting them, Schutt said.

One person was treated at the scene for frostbite.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire.
