Ms. Novo's Special Education Class

Hi family and friends!
For the next few years, I have the privilege of teaching special education in the Back of the Yards neighborhood in the South Side of Chicago. I teach an amazing group of 3rd-8th graders who have already changed my life. Many of my students are non-readers and non-writers. Sadly, our education system does not provide the resources to accommodate all of my students’ different needs.
This is where you come in.
In my 7th and 8th grade social studies class we are currently working on identifying the seven continents, the four oceans and naming one country on each continent. This is an ambitious goal and I am so excited for my students to reach it. The more I plan the more I realize what materials I need to have to ensure my students’ success. I’ve bought puzzles, maps, workbooks, and materials for projects. This is just one unit out of the many that will play out during the school year. All of these materials cost money, money that isn’t available for my students.
I need YOUR help to give my students the education they deserve. Glue sticks, popsicle sticks, workbooks, colored pencils…you get the picture! We need you!!
We live in a society where potential is spread equally but opportunity is not. We are all complicit in perpetuating the great equity gap that exists in our education system, and I need your help to fight it. We cannot do it alone. Thank you so much in advance!
Ps. Ms. Novo’s social studies class is doing a unit on the Revolutionary War! The Hamilton soundtrack will definitely make the cut.
