Our father, Steve, is truly an amazing man. He has always been the person to help anyone that needs it. He goes above and beyond for others. Now he needs a little help. He has a very rare form of cancer called Carcinoid Cancer. It is not curable but it can be treated if the tumors respond to the treatment. Here is the whole story.
In 2010, we discovered my father had a cancerous tumor in his lung (completely surprised us since he had never smoked in his life!). We went to Boston after being told here that it was inoperable. They removed two thirds of his right lung in a major surgery that took over 6 hours. Two weeks before his surgery my mother went in for open heart surgery to repair her mitral valve that had suddenly stopped working. These two major surgeries left our parents with enormous amounts of hospital debt.
My father did well for 3 years after the surgery and had no signs of cancer until he went for his checkup in 2013. This is when they found out that the cancer had spread to his liver. There were several spots so surgery was not an option at this time.
His cancer is a very rare form of Neuroendrine Cancer called Carcinoid. Unfortunately, they do not know a lot about it around here so we work with doctors in Boston. Each Carcinoid patient responds differently to various treatments. We have tried a couple of different chemotherapies. The first one did not work. However, the one that he has been on for the last 9 months is keeping the tumors stable. Although this is great news, the chemo leaves him very tired and he's not able to work as much as he used to. He will have to be on this chemo until the tumors no longer respond. At that time, we will have to find other treatment options. Now, not only are the medical bills starting to pile up but the insurance company is not fully covering his chemotherapy. This is why my brother and I have decided now was the time to reach out for help. Any contribution you can make would be greatly appreciated.
