Team Talin Juvenile Diabetes Doggie

On August 19, 2014 6 year old Talin was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes during a routine school physical. Talin was a happy, thriving, carefree little guy who never exhibited the typical signs of someone battling diabetes; no cravings, no mood swings, no excessive thirstiness, no sleepiness, nothing! Talin's diagnosis came as a complete shock to parents Scott and Stacey who quickly learned the challenges and fears of raising a son with juvenile diabetes. Like anyone suffering from diabetes, numbers quickly become a part of your daily routine; carbohydrate numbers, blood sugar numbers, insulin numbers, doctors numbers. Talin's target blood sugar number for his age is 150 which fluctuates randomly throughout the day with 300 being deadly high and 60 being terribly low. And again, as Talin still does not exhibit any typical signs of diabetes and is too young to know how his body is feeling; Talin's parents rely heavily on finger pokes, glucose meters, insulin shots, food monitoring and carb counts. Stacey spends every afternoon at Talin's lunch table at school ensuring that he's eating proper amounts and his target blood sugar rate is close to normal before sending him back to the classroom. Their 'Talin Journal' is extensive and their knowledge ever increasing. And while Talin's daily routine is exhausting, nighttime for Talin can be frightening. Talin's continual random blood sugar highs and lows can send him into critical situations very quickly and while Scott and Stacey check his sugar levels frequently throughout the night, Talin is 6 and waking him up to poke his fingers, give him insulin shots and worse off, trying to feed him is a daunting task; coupled that, Scott and Stacey are not sleeping and still have jobs to hold. Their tough situation is getting tougher! But as with every story, there is some hope! Stacey recently learned about the benefits of having a trained Diabetes Service Dog while doing some research on a local website. A Diabetes Service Dog is trained to recognize the extreme highs and lows that diabetics suffer and are life savers by alerting sleeping families to go get a juice box, or a blood sugar meter; dogs are even trained to call 911 if no one is available and the diabetic has lost conscienceness. Research has shown that these dogs significantly improve the quality of life and longevity of their owners and Talin is a perfect candidate to benefit from the companionship of a Diabetes Service Dog; that being said, Talin needs your help! The cost for a Diabetes Service Dog over a 10 year span is $25,000.00 and while that's one expensive pup, it's also the miracle (besides a cure) that Talin's parents are so desperately looking for.
