Mary Hernandez Medical Fund

Mary is a kind-hearted, hardworking, 44-year-old who owns a home in Lodi and has worked at Duncan Press for 25 years. Out of nowhere, she began to feel extreme fatigue at the end of July. Within a week, she had gone to the ER, was given a transfusion for anemia, and sent to a hematologist oncologist. Her diagnosis is Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cancer. Mary’s type can only be cured by a bone marrow transplant. Luckily her brother is a match, but first her leukemic cells must be knocked down by chemotherapy.

She spent August and September at U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. She is now at home but must go to UCD almost every day for more and more chemo. Her periodic biopsies have not hit the benchmarks yet for the bone marrow transplant, but we are hoping it will be soon. She continues to stay determined and optimistic.

Costs for Mary, even though she has health insurance, are substantial:  her monthly mortgage payment, her out-of-pocket portion of medical, her gas to/from UCD daily, and all of her living expenses like utilities, food, property taxes, pets, etc. She has had no income since July. Her family lovingly takes care of her housecleaning, food preparation, driving, everyday needs…and most of all…emotional support.
