Hi I’m Alex, a backpacker raising for Mr Aly English Class for kids in his village.

Why I am raising

Raising money to be able to buy materials to build classroom furniture for a free children’s English Class in Lombok, Indonesia.

Eventually aiming to get a laptop/tablet and projector to bring the classroom into the 21st century.

Who I am raising for

I met Mr Aly when I was backpacking Lombok.

Mr Aly runs a free English Class outside of Mataram, Lombok. For children whose school cannot provide English, nor can their parents afford a tutor.

Volunteers through Lovin Lombok provide free teaching. While Mr Aly hosts the class.

The class has become very popular and continues to grow. Now there is 4 Levels and 60-70 students attending!

How I got involved

I ended up volunteering for 6 weeks, teaching the classes held at his home.

Purpose and background

To better provide for the classes and support the children Mr Aly has built a classroom at his home. Renovating an old dilapidated chicken coop area.

Now the levels can be split to better support learning and create a truly education space.

Previously levels would be taught in the same living room, with major sound bleeding effecting the kids learning.

Currently all the children sit and write on the floor. The aim of this fundraiser is to be able to finish the classroom, provide basic furniture for the children and educational materials.

After furniture the plan is to create a second official classroom setting, which requires construction of a child safe staircase up to the currently inaccessible 2nd floor. Then renovate the space for use as a classroom

So far Mr Aly has used his own income to buy large whiteboards, concrete the floor, fix the roof, plaster the walls, paint the classroom etc. But, wages on Lombok are VERY little, so to get the classroom finished quicker for the kids he needs help.

Unemployment on Lombok is significant. With jobs paying well below the average and minimum wage for Indonesia, compared to its big cities. For these children they see English as a way to join tourism based jobs, seek further education opportunities elsewhere, work online and simple try to pull their families out of poverty.

These children don’t have material wealth, but an abundance of joy and zest for life with hopes and dreams
