Together for David Hidalgo, Juntos por David

David Hidalgo needs our help.  He was recently diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.  He will need a bone marrow transplant to survive, and we pray that his sibling match who resides in Costa Rica will be permitted a humanitarian visa to come to the USA to save David.   Without any income since he was diagnosed, David and his family need our support as their bills are mounting.

ABOUT DAVID:  He is a 31-year-old man who came to the United States from Costa Rica in search of the American Dream.  He is a hardworking, talented carpenter who has been here for 13 years.  He owns his own business. He met his wife Haiying shortly after he arrived, and they have two beautiful children; Santiago, age 11 and Dannika age 3. David is a very hard-working and likable man. Through his persistence and dedication to his craft, he has been able to build his own business and support his household financially. His wife has been able to stay at home for the last three years since their youngest was born, and now that she has started school, Haiying was just starting to consider going back to work.  David is very much a family man, you can see the adoration in his eyes when he looks at his wife and children.   He participates in Boy Scouts with his son, as well as basketball.  He is very involved in his community.  Both David and Haiying are very giving of themselves, and always willing to help others.   David is especially known for his big smile, his humility, and politeness.

On Sunday November 10, 2019 their lives changed forever. David started having  shortness of breath and chest pain. He and his wife went to the emergency room and after some blood work they sent David to Yale New Haven Hospital for further testing. They were shocked to receive a diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.  Naturally they were devastated with this diagnosis but thankful to God that the cancer was found. The doctors explained that if they had waited even a few days longer, David’s life expectancy would have been 3 months.

David was admitted to the hospital right away, he is an inpatient now at Yale New Haven Hospital-Smilow Cancer Hospital; and will be in treatment for at least 8 months. They have no idea when he will be able to return to work.  Haiying will be dedicated to taking care of his needs, and of their children.  They do not have immediate family in the area, so she will have a lot on her plate, and is grateful to friends that have already stepped up to assist.

This journey is difficult not only physically and emotionally but also financially.

The nature of David’s job as a self-employed craftsman is that he does not have short or long term disability insurance.   He was young and strong and never thought this would happen to him.    Now, he faces a complete stop to his income (as he was paid per job completed).  Unlike some more traditional work scenarios, there is no “office pool” to collect money to help David.  He and Haiying are hesitant to ask for help.   However, they have no choice.  Santiago has said he wants nothing for Christmas except for his father to recover.

David is one of the good guys.   He does things the right way.   He gives of himself.   Please consider any donation, large or small to keep this wonderful family afloat as they fight this illness together.    All donations will go directly to supporting the Hidalgo family and their household expenses, as well as assisting with David’s out of pocket medical costs.  God bless you all.
