Zambia 2017

For those of you who have found your way to this page my name is Christine Shepler. I am an Exercise Science/ pre-med major at Indiana University with an interest in pediatrics. This summer I have been accepted to work in a kindergarden program at a children's facility in Livingstone, Zambia for a month in June of 2017.

Currently Africa is home to over 34 million orphaned children who also face some of the world’s most glaring education and health inequalities. All too often, children who are born poor, female, or in rural or conflict-affected regions, face extreme disadvantage in education.  Over 1/3 of these children reside in sub-Saharan regions such as Zambia. With a significant portion of children living under the poverty line in Zambia, many suffer from poor hygiene, inadequate education, insufficient food and little healthcare. Individualized attention and a focus on early development and education are crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty. While there I will be working in local schools and orphanages with kids ranging in age from 2-6 years old.  I will spend most of my days with the kids teaching basic things such as counting, the alphabet, writing letters and numbers and maybe even a little english. I wish I could provide more about what my everyday will look like, but I won't really know until I arrive and they determine where I am most needed.

The decision to take this trip has been a big one for me, but I could not be more excited. With the looming thoughts of MCATS and med school applications I have felt a pull to be a part of something bigger during my last true summer of freedom. The kids that I will be working with have not grown up in a world like ours, to them the idea of regular meals and a supportive, healthy home are foreign concepts. I am determined that by the end of my trip I will have given them all the love and attention I can humanly give. I am humbled by this opportunity for personal growth and plan to take every chance I am given to learn about a world so unlike my own.

Unfortunately trips such as this one cost money, and this is what I am asking of you. With the costs of being a college student and trying to save up for med-school I need your help. Help me love these kiddos by donating to my fund- truly every little bit counts. I am sincerely greatful for your thoughts and generosity!

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" Isaiah 6:8
