Bring about the Makers Den at MPB!

Tax deductible
Our students at M.P. Brown are diverse, coming from different backgrounds both culturally and socio-economically. When it comes to education we believe in providing all of our students access to challenging learning opportunities and a rich curriculum. Being able to provide equal access to resources for all students in order for them to reach their learning goal is vital. With maker education in our school, all of our students will be able to have access and the support to the right tools they need to accomplish their learning goals.

Making supports our vision here at M.P. Brown because with maker education we will be providing a supportive environment that will challenge, encourage, and empower our students with the idea of equity in mind.

Maker education at M.P. Brown will provide our students the high-quality education that they need to be successful.

Maker education fully supports deeper learning, this  is something we would like to provide our students at M.P Brown. Deeper learning requires students to think critically, communicate and work with others, self-direct their own education, adopt academic mindsets, and to learn to be lifelong learners.

Students will have access to design thinking challenges, project-based learning activities, Genius Hours, and more through the resources and support that are provided in maker education.  Through a variety of deeper learning activities  our students will be motivated to engage in projects that are meaningful, unique, and personal.

At Margaret Pauline Brown Elementary school, we have begun makerspace activities.  Teachers have brought making to their classrooms through the use of  genius hour and the makerspace cart.   We are currently in the process of remaking our library into a multifunctional 21st century learning space.  We have a STEM based makerspace cart that includes media creation, electric circuits, robotics, coding and design intended for all  grades.

This new use of the library space will augment our current science instruction that does not include any engineering and design aspects.  Currently, our curriculum focuses on life science, earth science and physical science.  Our pedagogy will be able to shift from teacher led discovery to student driven learning.  The use of this  expanded library space will amend our teaching for years to come and is a sustainable addition to our teaching resources.

We are interested in expanding our library into a flexible makerspace environment allowing all students at M.P. Brown to become makers.  Students will be able to actively engage in hands on problem solving by measuring, observing, predicting and revising ideas that they have created.

We believe making at M.P. Brown will give our students opportunities to expand their life experiences. By expanding their experiences we hope to see increases in student motivation, and a wonder and excitement for learning.

Making will allow our students to have a growth mindset by learning through the design process in a meaningful, authentic and engaging way.
