MOVING to the mainland!
Well, my 52-year adventure in Hawaii has come to an end.
I'm about to leave for California! I'm excited about that, but also because - trumpets! - I'll be starting to make pots again! I haven't made pots since 1985!
Here's what I'm raising this money for:
$500 - COVERED! THANK YOU!!! A laptop - can't travel with a desktop, and need a good one so I can continue my work as a book designer. Shipping takes 3 to 8 weeks, so waiting for the desktop isn't an option.
$500 - airfare from Honolulu to my destination
(I have to be out of here by August 31st)
$3000 shipping my stuff over (door to door) PARTIALLY COVERED! THANK YOU!!!
$2500 used car on that end - my car here isn't even worth selling, so I have to start over again on that one.
Someone has stepped up and covered rent for a year - bless his heart! I have to get over there to find a place before I can rent it!
If you can help out here I'd be so grateful - and for those who donate over $200, you will get special goodies down the line when I get settled...!
Your help means the world to me - I'm SO grateful to you and every last person who donates. Thank you so very much!!!
Here's what I posted on FB - seemed like a good idea to expand on what I'm doing:
A friend asked me why I'm raising funds via gofundme. "Can't you cover your move? Aren't you making all kinds of art sales?" Hah! don't I just bloody well wish!!!
Here is the unvarnished, highly embarrassing truth. In the past six months, yes, I have had a sale here, a sale there. About enough in total to buy groceries for a week.
But the real truth is, no. Not enough to even pay my rent. That's why I have to leave - something about landlords not liking it when you don't pay rent. Especially new landlords whose mother just died, and who don't know up from down about being a landlord.
I have until August 31st to vacate. That's it. After that, I will either be swimming to California or flying on a nice plane, or trying to find a nice cozy bridge to hunker down under.
My bank account right at this minute stands at $217.56 - not quite enough to move me to California. Or even across town.
I'm not a great copywriter - I don't know how to spin words so you automatically think, Oh yeah, send Angela $x - nor how to write so I sound like poor-poor-pathetic me so you think, Gee, let's help out.
I just write how it is. In the past, I have been able to get by. But for the past few years, that bank balance drooped lower and lower, until now, I'm on my knees.
I don't like it. I never have liked asking for help. FB has helped me learn how to receive, and how to be more vulnerable with things I always used to keep private.
But this? This is a biggie, and my face as about as red as it gets. How I wish I could finance my move all by myself! How I wish I wasn't embarrassed to tears.
You know the old saying about beggars and horses. So I'm asking.
Because once I get to a place where it doesn't cost me both arms and legs just to buy a damn sandwich, I know I'll do much better.
I plan to keep designing/publishing/illustrating books, and in the slow times (which is most of the time), I'll be making pots!
Not the same style I did before - fancy-schmancy super-expensive porcelain - I'll be making great-looking AND utilitarian pots that people don't have to pay their first-born and three chests of gold for.
So I look forward to being in California, and making a living doing something beautiful and useful.
If you can help me achieve that dream, I'd be so happy. Thanks for reading this!
These are the pots I used to make. Porcelain, fired at 3000+ degrees!
And this is kinda how the new pots will look - not so detailed, maybe - don't know yet! But they will be lower fired, so will cost me less, and take WAY less time.
