Move Mom's piano to House of Music...& compassion

Give Mom's piano a legacy of giving! Help us move it to the Detroit House of Music

My Mom loved playing her 1926 Baldwin baby grand piano. In a life filled with challenges before her recent passing, her piano became a place where she could cry, bang her frustrations away, and play herself the music that brought her peace, solace and the love she needed while raising four children on her own.

After attempting to sell Mom's piano, we discovered no one wants grand pianos like her 1926 Baldwin for their home. Asking around, we couldn't even find a place that would take it as a donation. Local music schools aren't taking grand pianos. Wisconsin-based web sites are listing grand pianos as giveaways, and they can't find homes.

But we've found perhaps the greatest home for Mom's piano possible: A home where professional musicians will teach music to inner city children in Detroit.

We met Audra Kubat, a two-time Detroit Music Awards winning artist and music & songwriting teacher in Detroit schools, on our Milwaukee Brewers road trip in 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOCjSxTAaPY

She told us of how she wanted to create a place to make a difference with music - the kind of legacy we're all called to, using our gifts to help others.

Audra has done it: The Detroit House of Music. Its mission states "Every child has an instrument, and every instrument has a home." https://www.facebook.com/detroithouseofmusic/?ref=page_internal

DHM will connect some of the best musicians in a music-rich city with the inner-city youth of Detroit, to give those young people free music lessons, songwriting and recording opportunities and a safe place in the midst of the traumas and challenges of the inner city.

DHM will open this spring after the renovation of an abandoned and soon-to-be-restored 127-year-old Victorian home within walking distance of the Motown Museum: https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/detroit-city/2019/04/27/abandoned-home-house-music/3587336002/?fbclid=IwAR24QZ2sDoA1E6vcXB_SHTWLm8yXeS7IrPgkpVRON5tNBAvt3L6B0dYGzUw

But DHM needs a piano. And Mom's piano needs a home. Bringing them together gives Mom's grand piano possibly its grandest legacy - a legacy of giving, healing and love.

So to get the piano to Detroit, we have to move it. That's where you come in.

Please help us raise the $979 needed to give Mom's piano that grandest of giving legacies. We'll be raising money through GoFundMe and through a Facebook donation effort.

Any donations in excess of $979, the cost of the move, will be used to directly fund Detroit House of Music through its fiduciary, the Chalfonte Foundation. Its mission: "To provide spiritual, psychosocial, recreational, financial and educational support for children, youth and other individuals and families in need."

We know Mom is thrilled that this will be the legacy of the thing she loved the most outside her faith & family, her love of music.

Thank you for your compassion, to empower compassion.
