The Finckels Mountaineer for Cancer

As many of you know about a year ago I started working in the Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital as a Radiation Therapist. This year I have decided to take my dedication to my patients one step further. In March, 2019 Dean and I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain on the African continent, in a fundraising endeavor to raise awareness for global radiation treatment and to build a cancer center to the surrounding community in Moshi, Tanzania.

Climbing a mountain is a perfect symbol of an individual patient’s battle with cancer. Oftentimes, as you climb higher and higher, you feel the physical strain of the climb, as well as the occasional sickness that goes along with high altitudes. Yet you climb on! Seeing my patients go through these endeavors on a daily basis has inspired my team to take this symbolic journey and hike as far as our bodies shall allow. 

We are very excited to be a part of this adventure. As we prepare for the trip, we would like to humbly ask you to consider donating to a great cause . For all donations of $50 or more a name of your choice will be added to our prayer flags that will be carried to the top of the mountain in honor of those who have faced the struggle of cancer head on. All donations are tax-deductible.

Tanzania is a country in East Africa, part of the ‘Greater Horn’ of Africa with more than 47 million people, which means they should have 313 radiation machines to minimally treat their population.  Sadly, there are only two old cobalt machines for these 47 million people, meaning that most of the country has no access to cancer care treatment.
