Bring the Motzi Bread storefront to life!

THE BAKERY

It's time for Motzi Bread to take the next step: we're ready to be a neighborhood bakery! We started with bread subscriptions this past spring and were blown away by the response. Almost two hundred neighbors make Motzi Bread a regular part of their week. It's been an absolute blast to bake for them. A storefront will help us expand on this success to a true presence in the neighborhood of Charles Village.

We think our work is pretty special. We freshly mill our flour on site and use long fermentation to make our breads. All grains are sourced 100% from local farms. This commitment keeps dollars in the local economy while bringing you the most flavorful and delicious grains that the Chesapeake area has to offer. Supporting these farms has serious ramifications for the future of a just, resilient food system in a changing global climate. HaMotzi is Hebrew for the blessing over bread. It is a reminder of all the work required to bring bread to the table as well as a promise of a world in which all are nourished and food abundant. Motzi Bread is dedicated to accessible food and creative solutions to address hunger in Baltimore. No one is turned away.

OUR STORY

Russell and Maya first dreamed of opening a bakery while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. A bakery brought together their passions for quality food, social justice, and local economy. Russell applied his business school acumen to what he learned about the importance of growing grains for sustainable, small scale agriculture from his time as a farm hand at Next Step Produce. He then apprenticed as a baker at James Beard nominated Sub Rosa Bakery before becoming the lead baker for Woodberry Kitchen under the tutelage of Spike Gjerde, James Beard award winning chef. Maya has continued to hone her home baking skills while working as a Baltimore County Public Schools teacher.

 NEXT STEP

We are fortunate enough to have the perfect commercial space in the street level basement of our home for Motzi Bread. We’ve received a generous loan through the state Maryland and the city of Baltimore to renovate the space and transform it from a liquor store to a bakery and inclusive community space. We have a small funding gap, and so we are reaching out to our nascent and meaningful Motzi community to help us realize our dream. The storefront will open this fall, so we need your help by mid September. This crowd sourced funding will allow us to purchase the proper equipment for the local grains that we work with. It will also provide us with a sheeter to create plant based viennoiserie, including croissants and danishes. We look forward to this support to ensure that we have the inventory we need to get us started on the best foot possible when we open our doors this fall. Thank you for helping us make our storefront a reality!
