<div>Ein Rennen, das früher aus dem Herzen Europas durch Nordafrika bis nach Dakar, in die Hauptstadt des Senegals führte. Heute erobert sie die Weiten, Dünen und Wüsten der Arabischen Halbinsel.

<div>Mein Name ist Markus Hertlein. Aufgewachsen bin ich im ländlichen Baden-Württemberg, weit entfernt von waghalsigen Abenteuern und spannenden Rennen. Als Kind spielte Motorsport in meinem Leben kaum eine Rolle. Doch es gab eine Ausnahme: Die Rallye Dakar…

<div>Ich erinnere mich, wie ich wie gebannt vor dem Fernseher saß, schwer beeindruckt von ewigen Vollgaspassagen durch die Dünen. Seitdem war die Dakar immer irgendwie präsent – und ging mir nie ganz aus dem Kopf.

<div>Derjenige, der den Stein ins Rollen brachte, war mein Opa. Er war immer Motorradfahrer und Enthusiast und hat mir diese Leidenschaft weitergegeben. Mit 13 zog ich seine alte Quickly aus dem Schuppen – meine ersten „Schritte“ auf zwei Rädern. Mit 16 Jahren stieg ich auf eine 125-er Kawasaki Enduro um und mein Onkel nahm mich ab und zu mit auf Motocross Strecken. Mit 18 kaufte ich mir so schnell es ging eine richtige Enduro, damit wurde das Ganze ambitionierter. Ich machte Fortschritte, fuhr viel mit Freunden und auf kleinere Veranstaltungen, wurde <strong>Guide an einer lokalen Dirt-Riding-Schule</strong> und begann meine <strong>eigenen Enduro-Touren in Rumänien </strong>zu führen.

<div>Die größten sportlichen Meilensteine auf meinem Weg zur Dakar waren das <strong>Erzbergrodeo</strong>, die <strong>Red Bull Romaniacs</strong>, die <strong>Rallye du Maroc</strong> und die <strong>Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge</strong>. Hier wehte bereits ein anderer Wind - in Abu Dhabi und Marokko vor allem bereits ein heißer.

<div><strong>WARUM ICH DIE WÜSTE HERAUSFORDERN WILL</strong>

<div>Jeder, der sich für den Offroad-Sport begeistern kann weiß, dass die Dakar seit jeher die Königin der Rallyes ist. Seit 1978 steht sie über allen anderen Rallyes. Sie ist schneller, wilder, gefährlicher und länger. Die Dakar zu fahren wurde mein großes Ziel und fast schon zu einer Obsession. Sie ist das ultimative Ziel in diesem Sport. Allein Mitfahren zu dürfen verlangt einem viel ab. <strong>Ein Rennen, das alles von dir, deinem Körper, deinem Geist, deiner Familie – und deinem Portemonnaie fordert.</strong>

<div>Aber seien wir ehrlich: Was könnte besser sein als den ganzen Tag mit dem Motorrad durch die Wüste zu fetzen?

<div>Es geht nicht nur um die Hitze und den Sand. Nicht nur um die gewaltige Distanz von 8.000 bis <strong>10.000 Kilometern</strong> durch hartes Gelände, <strong>endlose Weiten und die Einsamkeit des „Empty Quarter“</strong>. Nicht nur um die ständige Herausforderung, sich nach rätselhaften Roadbook-Anweisungen wie „Nach 75,2 Meilen 30° abbiegen“ zu orientieren. Es ist all das zusammen – und noch so viel mehr...

<div>Lange Zeit schien <strong>internationales FIM-Racing</strong> für mich sehr weit weg. Doch 2022 stieß ich zufällig auf einen Instagram Post von <strong>Mike Wiedemann, dem jüngsten Fahrer</strong>, der jemals an der Dakar teilgenommen hatte. Er bot Leuten die Chance seine Rallye-Maschine zu fahren – ein Vorgeschmack darauf, was dieser Sport wirklich bedeutet.

<div>Ich lud ihn nach Widdern zur Offroad Schule von Marco Dorsch ein: <a href="https://www.marco-dorsch.de" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>www.marco-dorsch.de</strong></a> - einem meiner wichtigsten Trainingsorte. Als ich das erste Mal den Hahn seiner Rallye-Maschine spannte, war ich verloren – es fühlte sich an, als hätte ich einen unausgesprochenen Vertrag mit der Wüste unterzeichnet. Seitdem unterstützt mich Mike auf meinem Weg, fährt mit mir und bringt mich mit den richtigen Leuten in Kontakt.

<div>Dabei geht es aber nicht nur darum mir ein paar schöne Wochen zu bescheren. <strong>Es geht vor allem darum, zu beweisen, dass nicht nur die Reichen und Privilegierten sich diesen Traum verwirklichen können, sondern auch die hart arbeitenden, selbständigen, familienverbundenen Menschen. </strong>Dass es im Prinzip viele schaffen könnten, wenn Sie nur früh genug anfangen und sich konsequent darauf vorbereiten.

<div>My name is Markus Hertlein. I was born and raised in rural germany, far away from daring adventures and thrilling races.
</div>
<div>When I was a kid, motorsport wasn‘t really around. Yet there was one exception: the Rally Dakar. I remember sitting spellbound in front of the TV, watching this madness unfold through the dunes. Since then, it was always there and somehow always in my head.
</div>

<div>The person who got the ball rolling was my grandfather. He had always been an motorcycle-guy and passed that spirit on to me. At the age of 13, I pulled his old NSU Quickly – a moped from the 1950s – from his shed. Those were my first steps on two wheels. At 16, I upgraded to a Kawasaki dirt bike and my uncle took me to motocross tracks every now and then. By 18, I had bought myself a proper Enduro and started taking riding seriously. <div>and even startet organizing <strong>my own Enduro Tours in Romania</strong>. My first races Upat Cup and ADAC Pirelli Enduro Cup hooked me immediately. Big milestones on my road to Dakar were the <strong>Erzberg Rodeo</strong>, the <strong>Red Bull Romaniacs</strong>, <strong>Rally du Maroc</strong> and the <strong>Abu Dhabi Dessert Challenge</strong>.

<div><strong>WHY I CHALLENGE THE DESSERT</strong>

<div>For anyone who rides off-road the Dakar has always been the absolute pinnacle. Since 1978 it has stood above every other rally. It’s fast, it’s wild, it’s dangerous.

<div><strong>Racing the Dakar became my dream and my obsession. </strong>It is the ultimate goal in the sport. A race that asks everything of you: <strong>your body, your mind, your family – and your wallet. </strong>But tell me, what could possibly be better than riding a motorbike all day long through the desert?

<div>It’s not only about the heat and the sand. Not only the sheer distance of 8,000 to <strong>10,000 kilometers over rough terrain, through vast emptiness and the loneliness of the “Empty Quarter”. </strong>Not only about the constant challenge of navigating by cryptic roadbook instructions like: “Turn 30° after 75.2 miles.” It’s all of that combined – and so much more...

<div>For a long time<strong> international FIM racing </strong>felt far away. But in 2022, I stumbled across an Instagram post from <strong>Mike Wiedemann, the youngest rider ever</strong> to compete in the Dakar. He offered people the chance to try his rally bike – a taste of what the sport is really like. I invited him to my dirt-riding school, one of my key training grounds. The moment I twisted the throttle on his rally machine, I was hooked. It felt as if an unwritten contract had been signed between me and the desert. Since then, Mike has supported me on my journey, riding with me and connecting me with the right people.

<div><strong>But I don’t just want to participate – I want to race for a result. And you can’t simply sign up for Dakar. You need to qualify by earning points in international FM rally events. </strong>You need a bike, a team, practice, logistics and so much more.
</div>
