Mothmilk began as a personal zine and over the course of three years, has grown into a larger, submission-based compilation of work by queer and trans artists and writers across the country and around the world. The four published issues are available online and in several independent bookstores in 10 states (and growing!). This anthology takes new editions of previously published work alongside new submissions and situates these pieces in a collection of creative essays exploring the power and potential of queer storytelling through the medium of self-publishing as a mode of healing, education, community-building, and social change. There are 40 contributors featured in the anthology, each of various ages, races, genders, sexualities, and nationalities and their work consists of everything from poems, photo shoots, essays, and more.
Zines are a valuable tool for sharing knowledge and amplifying traditionally marginalized voices. Queer art is crucial to the survival and thriving of queer people of all ages. Queer art provides reflection and representation for groups of people who are often silenced and shamed, but also offers a model of vulnerability and sharing through storytelling that has powerful potential for envisioning a better world.
From the beginning, Mothmilk has been curated, edited, published, and distributed by Kye Davolt in between semesters at Prescott College. The anthology is also being used as their senior project for their undergraduate degree. Following the publication of this anthology, Kye is taking a break, and Mothmilk is going on hiatus. As the project has taken on a life of its own, the amount of people involved as collaborators, readers, and supporters has grown exponentially; one of the main reasons for compiling this anthology is to more formally document and honor the many people whose vulnerable, powerful works have been submitted over the last few years. The opportunity to professionally print and bind a book, as opposed to photocopied zines, drastically broadens the audience of readers and subsequently, future collaborators.
The goal for this fundraiser is set at $4,400. This amount includes the cost of professionally printing 350 copies of the anthology in 200 full-color pages, saddle-stitch bound, with a color cardstock cover with the Gloo Factory, a community-minded union print shop in Tucson, Arizona as well as postage costs and enough to compensate each of the 40 contributors whose work is featured. Any amount raised beyond the goal will be donated to the Transgender Suicide Hotline.
The best way to support this project is to preorder a copy of the book for $20! If you are able to donate $25 or more, you can opt to have your name listed in the back of the book as a supporter. If you’d still like to pitch in but cannot afford that much, there are rewards options for as low as $5, including 5 different handmade patch designs!
