Most Pure Heart of Mary Marathon

For almost 120 years, Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School has fostered academic excellence, character formation, and immeasurable hope and joy in the African American community of Mobile, AL.
This small but mighty gem of a school for PreK - 8th grade scholars is not without challenge. The very mission of the school is to welcome all who seek it, and that very frequently overlaps with families that simply cannot pay the cost of tuition. Heart of Mary has a long and beautiful history of welcoming families and asking them to make a good faith effort they can to pay whatever they can, which means many students require tuition assistance. This is where we come in.
College pals Sr. Christin Tomy, Alec Torigian, and Joe Eiden are training for the Twin Cities Marathon on October 7th with the intention of making our miles count for Heart of Mary. All money raised will go straight to the Tuition Assistance Fund. We’d like to raise $14,000, which is enough money for four kids to have their tuition fully covered. Is it an audacious goal? Absolutely. But we believe it’s worth it.
Why do we care so much about a little school in Alabama? Sr. Christin's congregation, the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, staffed the school from 1943-1990. As sisters walked with the African American community through the seminal civil rights era, they learned what it meant to be allies in the struggle for racial justice. For years, Sr. Christin has been hearing stories of how special Heart of Mary is. Fast forward to 2011: Alec began teaching at Heart of Mary as part of the ACE program. He was there for two years, and it touched him as much as it did the Sisters.
So here we are, channeling the audacious hope engendered at Heart of Mary. Please consider joining us in a month-long blitz to bolster the deeply important Tuition Assistance Fund at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School.
