Send our 8th Grade Students to DC!

Our 8th graders, former Civics students, have worked extremely hard throughout their middle school careers. In 7th grade, they scored an average of 87%, well above the Miami- Dade District,  on the state wide Civics exam. To celebrate their hard work and achievements we want to take an educational trip to Washington, D.C.

Morningside K-8 is a Title 1 school where 93% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. The majority of our students come from low income households, many of whom have never left the South Florida area.  We would like to partner with the reputable Close Up program. This program will allow our students to collaborate and debate about today's most pressing issues with students from around the world and experience our nation's capital. Students will have the opportunity to participate in workshops geared toward becoming actively informed citizens who will learn to solve unique problems facing the community. Students will visit the White House, WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, The Smithsonian, Arlington National Cemetery, and The Capitol Building, among others.

This program costs $1,565 per student which includes the trip, accommodations, all meals, and airfare. The cost is $1,965 for another teacher (only one teacher is free for every 10 students, but we're required to take 2). In addition to GoFundMe, we are doing fundraisers including candy sales, car washes, yard sales, and bake sales. We are also in the process of writing a grant and applying for several mini grants. We realize this is an expensive trip, but for some of our students, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. 

We plan to take the students in late May 2018 so they can experience the beauty that is spring in Washington, D.C.  We have 12 students signed up to go! Please donate and share!
