My name is Will Allen, and I'm a 19-year-old student from Canada. When I first learned of the refugee crisis several years ago, I was quite moved in heart... and that was before I learned that it had been going on unnoticed, in various parts of the world, for decades! I've been involved in caring for refugees and helping them integrate into Canadian society in a lot of capacities for the past four years, and it has been very rewarding - I have learned so much and developed so many important relationships through my experience.
This March, I will be going to volunteer with EuroRelief for 6 weeks in the biggest refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesvos. This camp, called Moria, receives refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, and many other countries, who have washed up on the shores of the island on boats or rafts from Turkey. EuroRelief is involved in providing them with food and water, hygiene kits, clothing, and housing; helping the camp to clean up the area and set up tents; and specifically supporting unaccompanied minors and vulnerable women. I am very interested in learning what the refugee experience is like, closer to where it begins.
I am responsible for paying my room and board while on Lesvos, as well as covering my food and travel costs. The funds I receive through this GoFundMe will be withdrawn to my bank account, and I will personally use them to cover these expenses. Any excess funds I receive will go to support EuroRelief's work at Moria camp! If you are able to give - either to support me financially, or to support chronically underfunded refugee work closer to home - I'd be very grateful. Thanks everyone!
