Outside play space for Morgan

Our daughter Morgan was born with Spina Bifida and is (so far) unable to walk....and she wouldn't complain about it for all the stuffed animals in the world.

Now 10 years old, lifting Morgan and her wheelchair up and down our front step has grown increasingly difficult. The combined weight of Morgan's 52 pounds with the weight of her chair equals almost as much as Mom does!

Morgan also gets anxious going down the step - it's definitely not the safest maneuver to make repeatedly throughout the day.

Although she doesn't walk, Morgan can crawl. Crawling is her main mode of transportation when she's not in her wheelchair. In the summertime, she likes it when we leave the back door open so she can go in and out as she pleases.

Her main outside play place, the deck in the back, has become weathered and is at least a few years beyond needing to be replaced. One summer day before we realized how bad it was, we had to pull over 50 slivers from her legs after she had been out playing!

She loves to be outside, but without being able to crawl on the deck or make it to the lawn on her own, she often just sits there in her chair, without complaint, watching her siblings play.  But it hurts our hearts and we'd love to see  her participating instead of just watching.

We have been saving to add a small porch with a wheelchair ramp to the front entry way, and replace the deck in the back - using that super cool plasticized decking material (even new wood decking splinters).

We can already picture it:

 - The front porch would have a step on one side and  a safe, sturdy ramp on the other side where Morgan could independently enter and leave our home.

 - The back deck would be safe for her to crawl around on, with wide steps to the grass. It would also have several raised, wheelchair-accessible boxes that we could fill with water or sand to play in. We would also love to be able to let her plant one box with seeds to grow her own garden. A ramp would take her to and from the yard, whenever she wants.

Last year we had to re-roof our home (which we did ourselves, but still drained the budget), and as summer draws near again, we are realizing we won't be able to build these this year without some help.

We are very handy and could do the work ourselves; the funds requested here would cover the amount we cannot, and we'd have them both built and ready for warm weather.

If we are able to raise enough money to make this possible, please expect lots of updates  on our progress and pictures of Morgan in her  new space when the project is complete!

Anything you can do to help would make all the difference in the world to our little angel.
