Monster & Sea 24 Paddle Pcola 2018

The 24:

"There is a community of people who are fighting for you. Our hope is that this will give you a moment of peace during a crazy time. Love from the Monster and Sea Community-Pensacola."

That simple note is the mission of the 24, to raise money for families dealing with cancer.

Our goal is to offer a breath of fresh air to families dealing with the wrecking ball of cancer. It is a chance for them to feel “normal” for even just a minute. Because it is cash, they can choose how it will best help them. For example: dealing with the mountain of bills that come, even with good insurance. Gas money, food, babysitters so no appointments are missed. Family movie night, A trip out. The list is long.

Our team is comprised of 6 individuals from the Pensacola and Destin, FL areas. Not only will we be paddling for a 24 hour period from 8am, April 14th, to 8am, April 15th, but we will be inviting all our friends and families to join us on the water.

Last year, we raised $13,000 that went to 13 local, deserving families in there time of need.

This simple idea is very special and as one person it is difficult to make a difference - but as a community - that is where it gets fun and where we truly make an impact.

The History of the 24:
Two years ago a group of 6 paddlers got together with the idea of paddling for 24 hours relay style. Our goals were modest and simple.
1.Have fun.
2. Inspire our community
3. Raise some grass roots funds to help families dealing with the chaos that cancer causes.

We were blown away. Not only did we have fun and rally our community but we raised 7,000.00 by doing what we loved - to benefit others. 7 families each received an envelope of 1,000.00 cash with a simple note inside: “There is a community of people who love you and are fighting for you.”

The second year the 24 moved beyond Seattle to seven cities (one for each envelope from the prior year) across the U.S and Canada. Each team had the same goals. As a combined group we raised 50k. That is 50 families we were able to help.

The third year 22 teams across the US and Canada raised a combined 145k for families dealing with cancer!

This year is year 4 - it really feels like a wave is forming deep out in the ocean and is gathering great momentum.

The nuts and bolts:

Some key details to help in planning and understanding this craziness.

Q: Is this a race?
A: No. It is a group of friends getting together to inspire their community to help families dealing with the chaos of cancer. Sadly the statistics say 1 in 3 people will deal with Cancer in their life time.

Q: Why 24 hours?
A: Because it is difficult. When you are dealing with cancer it is a 24/7 beast. It takes personal focus and being surrounded by your friends and family to battle and fight. While paddling in no way mimics that battle - focusing with friends, family and community for one purpose is very similar.

Q: Can other people paddle with us?
A: Absolutely. Encourage your community to come out and keep the team going.  We will provide details on where to launch.

Q: Is it just SUP?
A: It started that way but paddling is such a diverse community, all with kind hearts and willingness to go. A mixed team is a-okay. For example in North Carolina and Idaho each team was comprised of SUP, Prone and OC.

Q: How does it work? The relay part?
A: The team is comprised of 6 paddlers and breaks down to pairs for each hour. At 8 a.m the whole team and who in the community shows up paddle as a group for an hour. From there it drops down to pairs trading off every hour. To ring in the Midnight hour the group paddles together again. (Each year here in Seattle the community has really rallied at this time. The team of 6 plus about 30 additional people to paddle and cheer on the team.) After midnight it drops back to pairs and then for the final hour the group paddles together to finish.

Q: The money. How does this work?
A: Each team is raising funds for their local community. Think grass roots, on the ground help. No red tap, foundations or questions of where does the money actually go. It is actually very simple!

What we are doing makes a difference and we are so thankful for this community and its unwavering commitment to doing good things.
