Science! Science! Science! and a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Do you remember when you went to camp for the first time or found out that science was more than your favorite subject in school?
Our entire fifth grade is hoping to be part of an outdoor education program that focuses on developing science and social skills. Several of our teachers are trying to pull the funds together so that every child can go and I personally am trying to take part in this effort by focusing on the needs of our students recieving special education services.
With your help, we can ensure that all of our students have the opportunity to go on this amazing adventure!
This type of opportunity is typically not accessible to our students; many of our families struggle daily to pay for basic needs such as food, clothing and housing.
Our special education students can be part of wonderful program that is happening for fifth graders at James Monroe Elementary School in San Leandro with your help!
With the proper funding, we will be taking our students who recieve special education services on a fifth grade overnight scientific outdoor education field trip in May, 2017.
It will cost each student $155 plus $45 for transportation. We have 22 fifth grade students who recieve special education services. The entire cost of the program is approximately $13,000 so any money we raise beyond $4400 will start helping other students go as well.
The benefits of this trip are enormous for our students. They will experience the independence of staying in a cabin with classmates (and chaperones,) they will experience a rural environment away from the city, and they will interact with science curriculum outside of the classroom. Socially, these students will build bonds with classmates that will carry them into middle school with added confidence.
