Save Monkton Wyld's Pine Hall

MONKTON WYLD COURT in Dorset is well-known and loved by many thousands of people who remember it as the home of happy schooldays (1940-1982), a diverse residential community, a family seaside holiday base, the venue for a wedding, a special party, a reunion; a fun and formative volunteering experience, or where they enjoyed a course on one of a huge variety of life-enhancing skills.

At the heart of all this was, and is, the Pine Hall, built in the 1960s to a cutting-edge design and specifications, with a sprung wooden dance floor, a stage, projection room, south-facing floor to-ceiling windows and a full-length balcony.

Over the past 50 years it has proved incredibly versatile as a sometimes free, sometimes for-hire venue for the groups whose activities fund the upkeep of Monkton and the rest of our educational and social projects for locals and others, of all ages.

Over this time it has also, inevitably, deteriorated. The roof now leaks, the enormous single-glazed windows rattle and let out the heat from the wood-burner. In normal, non-Covid times, we would be using profits from our Guest House bookings to pay for the repairs, but right now our hands are tied and repairs are increasingly urgent. Left much longer, the Pine Hall may be beyond rescue.

Estimates for replacing the roof, (minus our own free labour) come to £15,000. That is the top priority. If we can raise more money we will add improvements to upgrade the insulation, the windows, and make the Hall self-sufficient in renewable energy. Wheelchair access and an extra toilet would make it more suited to modern demands.

We estimate that the work would break down as follows:
Replacing the roof: £11,500
Insulating the roof: £4,000
New entrance with WC: £4,000
Insulating the walls: £2,000
New front windows: £2,000
Blinds for windows: £600
Sanding the sprung floor: £500
Thick Insulating curtains: £200
Decorating: £150

This GoFundMe appeal is currently our best chance of raising funds to get cracking on the urgent work, so that when we re-open, the Pine Hall can once again be available, and paying its own way. Our priority with your donations will be to restore this tremendous shared facility so that it will last for many decades to come and can be enjoyed and loved by the hundreds of people who come here every year to learn, relax, play and celebrate. So, if you have any spare cash to donate, we will accept it gratefully and put it to good use.

Various rewards including free holidays at Monkton will be offered for major donors, please contact us to ask us what rewards you would like.
