Beneath the surface of Mexico’s Caribbean lies a hidden paradise — a vast network of caves and cenotes that sustain life, culture, and history. These fragile underground ecosystems form the veins of the Yucatán Peninsula, connecting the jungle, the ocean, and the communities that depend on their waters.
For years, Cenotes Urbanos, a volunteer-based citizen science project in Playa del Carmen, has worked tirelessly to protect, explore, and share this hidden world.
Our mission is simple but urgent: to preserve the caves and cenotes before they disappear by the social appropiation of those ecosystems.
Every contribution helps us continue our work:
Environmental conservation – cleaning and restoring cenotes affected by urban waste and pollution.
Scientific exploration and mapping – documenting new cave systems to protect them from destruction.
Community education – hosting public talks, workshops, and environmental events that inspire action.
Citizen science and biodiversity monitoring – studying species that exist nowhere else on Earth.
Cultural connection – promoting respect for the sacred role cenotes play in Maya heritage.
Cenotes Urbanos is powered entirely by volunteers — divers, scientists, educators, and citizens who believe that protecting what’s beneath our feet is protecting life itself.
Join us in defending this hidden paradise.
Together, we can ensure that the caves and cenotes of Mexico continue to breathe, inspire, and give life.
