Fund Social-Environmental Education & Advocacy

Donation protected

By a stroke of luck and solid support, I've secured a place and partial-funding to be a part of a pioneer cohort for a Master's in Movement, Mind and Ecology. On graduation of the master’s, I will apply for a PhD through Dartington Arts College in the UK.

Potential explorations for my PhD in 2022:
- Intersectional environmentalism: how climate justice is racial justice.
- How the bush/ the wilderness can play a foundational role in navigating climate justice in developing countries.

I came across this Master's Programme at Schumacher College in the UK - a master's I feel I willed into existence. After spending the last 4 years trying to connect arts and science, I've found a course that supports theories and imaginings of my wildest dreams.

I’ve fortunately been able to start the programme online whilst I navigate visa and immigration processes. I’ve managed to tap into savings and make a personal loan to complete the programme, at present there remains an outstanding £7000 (R140 000). I’ve started this fundraising campaign to bridge the financial deficit so as to allow me to complete the course.

In the last couple years, I've been focusing on working with Non-Profit and Non-Government Organisations. I've worked with organisations in the conservation space - organisations based in Cape Town who focus on education, inclusion and diversifying of ocean and outdoor spaces. In working with these organisations I've been able to streamline my vision for the work I would like to focus on in South Africa in the next 2-5 years. The work I've been involved in and the master's I'm currently enrolled in, together enable me to move forward in creating, growing and networking for a foundation that will connect under-resourced communities to local South African landscapes.

It is my intention to match and reinvest every donation to my master’s campaign back into South African social and ecology advocacy. The matching and reinvestment of each donation towards my masters will take the form of collaboration with the social and conservation organisations I've been working with in recent years. Specific details on the projects/initiatives will be shared here as progress is made in the coming weeks.

Finances thus far:
I’ve been fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of 2 grants both awarded by Schumacher College:
Scholarship of £5000
Bursary of £2000

The total cost of the masters programme is:
£16 500 for international students.

(A Schumacher College course in affiliation with Plymouth University in the United Kingdom).

In the masters the three modalities - Movement, Mind and Ecology - are interweaved together to unite the arts and science faculties. The principal theme in the program is giving rise to creative practices in navigating our climate crisis. It is the idea that we need not only scientists, doctors, lawyers and left-brained thinkers. We too need theatre, storytelling, movement, poets, guerrilla gardeners and right-minded creatives.

There's no room, time or energy to make this a reserved, “you-can-only-ride-at-this-height” fight. The only way through this is as a united collective.
