On October 24, 2020, we lost our beautiful and amazing daughter Monique Harmse at the young age of 24. Monique and her sister Marleen were both diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis in early childhood. Due to the extreme cost of medical care, their fight has been an uphill battle. Upon learning of her passing, many have asked what they could do to support us during this difficult time. After much consideration, we have decided that the greatest way to honor our daughter Monique, would be to establish a memorial fund benefiting her sister's fight against Cystic Fibrosis.
Marleen, like her older sister, is a brave young warrior, valiantly persevering in her fight. Marleen is currently 20 years young. As one could expect, the expenses associated with such a diagnosis are unimaginable. One of the items that could provide the most benefit to Marleen at this time is a Percussion/Vibration Vest, otherwise referred to as an Airway Clearance Vest. Physiotherapy is a necessary part of treatment for sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis. This medical device serves the purpose of helping to loosen the mucous that builds up and becomes lodged within the lungs. This vest would help Marleen to maintain a level of independence in managing her condition. Unfortunately, Marleen's health benefits in South Africa where she resides, will not cover this necessary device.
In addition to an Airway Clearance Vest, Marleen has many medications and supplements that she must take to aid her in maintaining optimum health as a patient with Cystic Fibrosis. Our hope for Marleen, is that she may one day be a candidate for a lung transplant, should that time arrive and it be her wish. In order for a lung transplant to happen, Marleen's overall health and physical condition must be stable and she must remain very dedicated to her prescribed treatments. Our primary goal is to ease the financial burden carried by our daughter and our family and extended family, and to make managing her condition less stressful. A person who is ill, should not have to worry about whether or not their treatment is affordable.
Finally, one of Marleen's greatest desires, is to be physically reunited with her father in the United States and to have the opportunity to meet her three half-brothers (Aiden, Elijah and Benjamin) face-to-face. Should we be able to collect enough money, our desire is to help Marleen turn her dream into a reality by providing her with the funds to cover her airfare and travel expenses, including the expenses of her care provider.
We, as a family, are feeling exceptionally Blessed that our amazing Marleen has found the Love of her Life. Our wonderful soon to be son-in-law Pierre, is one of Marleen's Biggest Supporters and Care Providers at this time. We pray that our sweet daughter has many years ahead and by contributing to this fund, you are helping her to reach her Happily Ever After. We have no doubt that the Best way to honor our Monique is by helping her sister to fight Cystic Fibrosis.
No parent should ever have to experience the pain of loosing a child. The sadness is at times unbearable and the best way we know to deal with this tremendous loss, is to focus our efforts into continuing this fight. Marleen is not Alone! We will not give up! We humbly ask for your support; any amount is appreciated. Please join us in battle with prayers and positive thoughts as we fight this beast!
Thank you for taking the time to read our story! We love you all and appreciate all the support you have and continue to provide us during this most challenging time!
