<div><strong>Whale’ come</strong> in the middle of the Atlantic!

<div>My name is Stephanie and I'm a PhD student at the University of the Azores. I studied molecular biology in Belgium and I’m applying my skills to study cetaceans feeding ecology, here in the middle fo the Atlantic. More specifically, I'm studying toothed cetaceans (odontoncetes) eating cephalopod, such as sperm whales, Risso’s dolphin and pilot whales.

<div>I use a participatory science approach, which means that I collaborate with several whale watching companies to collect biological samples, while tourists are on board. These samples are mainly poop of sperm whales and they are found behind the animals after they dove to the depth for hunting squids. This year, I also hope to find feces of Risso’s dolphins and pilot whales. <div>Having insights about their diet is important so we can study how changes in the ecosystem (water temperature, food availability,...) affect the whales and dolphins of the Azores.

<div>The contribution of the tourists operators is very valuable and this work couldn’t be done without their participation. The guides on board include some bright marine biologists with hight interest for research. Moreover, clients enjoy to have an engaging experience rather than consuming a touristic activity.
</div>

<div>However, touristscs important as a larger amount of samples is needed to be able to have scientific results, publish the results and the doctoral project to be accomplished.
</div>

</div>
<div>The human resources fees and the laboratory costs are covered by a grant that I received from the Azorean government. However, in order to have enough samples, this summer, I also need to financed boat rental and some extra costs.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I created this Go Fund Me page to help to achieve this work and advance the research about the whales of the Azores and the deep-ocean ecology.

<div>Je m'appelle Stéphanie et je suis doctorante à l'Université des Açores. J'ai étudié la biologie moléculaire en Belgique et j'applique mes compétences à l'étude de l'écologie des cétacés, ici au milieu de l'Atlantique. Plus précisément, j'étudie les cétacés qui mangent des céphalopodes, tels que le cachalot, le dauphin de Risso et le globicéphale.

<div>Il est important de connaître leur régime alimentaire pour pouvoir étudier comment les changements dans l'écosystème (température de l'eau, disponibilité de la nourriture) affectent les baleines et les dauphins des Açores.

<div>La contribution des opérateurs touristiques est très précieuse et ce travail ne pourrait être réalisé sans leur participation. Les guides à bord comprennent des biologistes marins brillants avec un grand intérêt pour la recherche. De plus, les clients apprécient de vivre une expérience engageante plutôt que de simplement consommer une activité touristique. Cette approche est très précieuse et permet au projet d'exister.

<div>Cependant, cette année est importante car une plus grande quantité d'échantillons est nécessaire pour pouvoir obtenir des résultats scientifiques, publier les résultats et réaliser le projet de doctorat.

<div>Les frais de ressources humaines et de laboratoire sont couverts par une subvention que j'ai reçue du gouvernement des Açores. Cependant, afin d'avoir suffisamment d'échantillons, j'ai également besoin de financer la location d'un bateau de recherche cet été.
