Fundraising for Medical for Shelley Waye
After being transported by ambulance to Grande Prairie, Alberta from her home in Nampa, my big sister, Shelley Waye, has been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. We do not know how advanced it is (what stage). However, it seems to be quite advanced as her eyes and skin have yellowed. She is scheduled to see a specialist as well as get a biopsy on her liver. However, over the weekend, she's been vomiting and cannot keep anything down. Her stomach has also hardened (ascites).
Taken from the US National Library of Medicine:
"The natural history of cirrhotic liver disease progresses from a compensated to a decompensated phase. Ascites is the main complication of cirrhosis,3 and the mean time period to its development is approximately 10 years.4,5 Ascites is a landmark in the progression into the decompensated phase of cirrhosis and is associated with a poor prognosis and quality of life; mortality is estimated to be 50% in 2 years" In other words........this is escalating QUICKLY.
As I type, she is on her way to the hospital in Peace River to be assessed.
This particular type of cirrhosis was diagnosed as a 'chronic illness' (not from alcohol). When I inquired with my doctor about being a donor, he said we would test my liver first as it might be a hereditary thing. So, we wait.
This is where I ask for help. I wouldn't ask for help for myself, but you can bet your boots I am asking for help for my sister. Any donation at all would be much appreciated. And, if you cannot donate at this time, just share. You never know who can help.
The money would be used to travel to see the specialist in Grande Prairie, hotel rooms (if needed), gas, meals, etc. It is also to help offset some of the costs the family will incur when taking her as it will mean time off from their jobs. Shelley was unexpectedly laid off from her job after she returned home in March after being here in Miramichi for our mom's funeral.
