Monarchs and bees
Donation protected
Hello food eater!
We want to help the bees and butterflies, specifically the monarchs that use Texas as a mating ground on their way through the rest of the US.
Monarchs fly through Texas on the way to Mexico during fall where they accumulate for winter. In spring the monarchs again take flight to pollinate plants throughout the US stopping in Texas. Including plants that give us food (I knew you were a food eater).
After reading a book from our local library about monarchs and the decrease in population, I wanted to help. We have been reading books in preparation for buying land and getting our kids interested in conservation and how the ecosystem works together.
We now have the land and will dedicate 3.7 acres to native wildflowers and milkweed. This area includes a wet weather creek and a pond.
This gofundme will pay for the native wildflower mix as well as milkweed seed (if needed see below).
As the temperature gets warmer here in central Texas the monarchs will need places to lay eggs.
When I am able to purchase seed and plants appear I will register our farm as a Monarch Waystation with https://monarchwatch.org/.
I have also sent an application for 2019 Free Milkweed for Restoration Projects Application. One of the necessities is that native wildflowers are in the area. If I am approved for the above stated project, this money will go to the purchase of native wildflower seed mix to cover the 3.7 acres.
Keep in mind that this is not only for the Monarchs but for the bees and other pollinators too. Searching
"foods that need pollinators" will bring up many of your favorite foods. Supplying these foods is also how farmers earn money. I myself have had to pollinate my garden with a paintbrush when bees and butterflies were not coming around. On a large scale that just isn't possible. other links for educating
This is the book that inspired me: "The monarchs are missing: a butterfly mystery"
