Mon Luis Island Schoolhouse

Hello Friends,
We need your help. A group of friends, relatives, former classmates and community members are trying to save our one-room schoolhouse. We have formed a non-profit organization that will care for the building and hopefully turn it into a Mon Luis Island museum for the entire Mobile community to enjoy and for us to be proud of.
As a result of the generosity of friends of Thelma Duggin and others who donated in memory of our beloved matriarch and greatest motivation, Mrs. Elizabeth Duggin, who died March 29, 2018, we were able move the building from off of Oliver Collins’ land onto property across the road donated to us by Mrs. Duggin.
We still have a long way to go in order to renovate the Creole schoolhouse and return it to its historic beauty.
We really need $6,000.00 right NOW to purchase a roof and to restore the windows in order to get the building in the dry.
The roof will cost approximately $5,000 to replace and the beautiful windows will cost about $1,000 to refurbish. The exterior and interior renovation is estimated to cost an additional $10,000.
The Mobile Preservation Society has been talking to the Mobile County Commission to perhaps get a matching grant for our project. We need to have as much money as possible in our bank account when we sit down to the table with the County Commissioners, so that they realize how much effort we are willing to put into renovating our schoolhouse.
Celestine Collins Birch was the first to donate $200. Leslie Dickinson White won $500 at the lawn party, so she decided to add $500 and contribute an even $1,000 to the Mon Luis Island Schoolhouse Project.
As members of the Board of Directors Alphonsine McLaughlin Lyons and I (Patricia Dickinson Crawford) could not let Leslie top us so we donated $1,000 each. When Claude Durette and his family were at the lawn party this year, his son donated $250 to the project. David Newell of the Mobile Preservation Society donated $500. Margaret Dickinson Lewis gave $500. We received several smaller donations of $20 and $25. Every donation counts.
