My mother worked as a waitress while she was raising me... she had never had health insurance until she began taking social security and qualified for Medicare... when she finally went to the doctor for the first time in decades she found she was in relatively good health for her age, etc... the only issue - Breast Cancer.
As can be imagined this was terrifying news for her and the anxiety of treatment outweighed the actual thought of dying!
It has been a year since her diagnosis, she has undergone MRI's, a PETSCAN, a lumpectomy, installation of a port, removal of a nipple, Chemo, Radiation, a couple of other minimally invasive procedures and is currently finishing out her year of continuous HER2 infusions, and the 1st of 5 years of oral medication. This for a woman who had a full-blown panic attack having her first mammogram.
Mom has endured all of this while not missing a day of work! She cleaned houses for the duration of her treatment, even when the side-effects of the Chemo were so overwhelming she had to wear rubber gloves because her finger tips were raw and bleeding.
She is the strongest person I know. During this time, she learned that because of circumstances out of her control, she is losing her house. This is devastating, but the bright side is hopefully we will move in together and I can return some of the warmth and love that she has given me all of my life. This week mom was told that the entire undercarriage of her car is rotting away and the mechanic told her to decide if she wants to spend thousands of dollars to fix it or get another car. Neither is really an option at this point.
I am reaching out to friends and family because I don’t have the means to provide her the little bit of support and assistance she needs (and would NEVER ask for) to at least be able to continue driving herself to her infusions, other doctor’s appointments and to work. My cousin recommended we try this, as, it takes a village!
