A Safe Home for Moises & Irene

I met Moises about 3 years ago while working on projects in Peru. I would travel to Lima two or three times per year, and with my limited Spanish he became an asset in helping with translations, and eventually became a great friend. It was only this past June that I learned about the difficulties he and his family had faced, as well as the situation that is keeping him apart from his mother.
Moises is a glass-half-full kind of person that is always smiling and thankful for what he has. He is resourceful, determined, health conscious, and a true gentleman. He wants the best for everyone. There are two things he says rather frequently: he often reminds me to smile, telling me it doesn’t cost anything, but it can do a world of good; and he reminds me that a person’s worth is not measured by what they don’t have. He enjoys the little things more than anyone I have ever met.
Moises often spoke of his mother, Irene, and I knew she lived quite a distance from him. They frequently spoke on the phone and he would make the 15-hour journey to see her a few times a year. What I wasn’t aware of was that they wanted to be together, but were unable to because the house Moises lived in wasn’t safe for the two of them. Moises stays in Lima where he can find work to support himself and his mother; and Irene lives in Arequipa where she has some family and the cost of living is much less.
I convinced him to let me come and see his home. It was his childhood home, and there we spoke at length about what could be done to bring this house to a safer state. The walls are falling apart, the front door is flimsy, and the weak roof needs constant repair. It isn’t safe for him, and it certainly isn’t safe for his mother, who now at 75 suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. While Moises is happy to make do with what he has, he knows that being able to reunite with his mother would make a world of difference for them both. I convinced him to let me help as best as I could.
This Gofundme campaign was made with the help of so many people who lives have been touched by Moises, and some who have never even met him… and so today, on behalf of Moises and Irene, I’m asking for your help.
Your donation toward the $8,000 in expenses will contribute to the following:
-Rebuilding stable walls with beams to support a new roof.
-Removal of the current plastic roof; replace with a solid roof.
-Proper door framing for a secure, solid door and locks (front and back door).
-Installing windows (currently no windows exist).
-Repair and resurface the cement floor.
-Frame and build a space for Irene’s bedroom
-Demolition & disposal fees
-GoFundMe Fees
If donations exceed $8,000, the additonal funds will go toward:
-Adding water lines for kitchen and bathroom
-kitchen cabinets and counters
-tiling the floors
-Purchasing kitchen and bathroom fixtures (sinks, tub, toilet, etc.)
