Mobilizing Malea with K-9 Support

Donation protected
Malea is my 18 year old niece. She is a 2020 graduate from H H Ellis Technical High School with a budding interest and talent for baking. Following her 18th birthday in September, she started after her dream of opening a bakery and entered the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, NY.

While away at school, she had a serious and sudden medical emergency that required further testing and temporary departure from her education. We learned that Malea suffered from a complete dislocation of her L5 vertebrae and was experiencing the debilitating effects of severe spinal stenosis. She spent days sedated in the hospital while they monitored her condition and planned next steps. In the blink of an eye everything has changed for this young lady.

Instead of meeting with classmates for study sessions and enjoying her college experience, she is meeting with spinal surgeons and neurologists to discuss the series of surgeries that will be required to prevent her spine from further deterioration. She is unable to walk and has been suffering from a speech impediment as a result of nerve damage. Her doctors have advised her of the risks associated with her upcoming surgery, to include never walking again and the possibility of losing her ability to speak at all.

Malea was introduced to Wool 'n Wind when therapy dogs were brought to her High School to assist students with the grief of a tragic loss. Malea was eager to help. She learned how to handle the dogs and became their ‘person’. For the next three days, the dogs were left in Malea’s care to support the student body. Upon receiving her own unfortunate news, Malea immediately reached out to Wool 'n Wind to inquiry about the possibility of acquiring her own therapy dog.

Wool ‘n Wind is committed to insuring that Malea receives a dog she can lean on following her surgery, recovery and transition into a new life style, and working with her family to assure  training is available for her therapy dog to provide service supports as well. This Go Fund Me will help to support 50% of the cost to acquire this puppy, and create a fund that is available for the care, training, and veterinary expenses of Malea’s puppy, as well as anticipated medical expenses that will not covered through insurance. Beyond the funding for her service dog, all proceeds will go into an account for Malea to help supplement the costs of medical equipment and medical expenses associated with her care, under the advice and supervision of her family.

Malea's immediate goals are to gain back some independence and prepare for her first major surgery on March 29th. Our family appreciates any contribution to this cause and ask that you keep Malea in your prayers as she navigates the future. Malea has maintained a positive attitude and is determined to defy the odds given to her. She is a devote Christian and has kept steady faith in the miraculous all throughout this challenging time.
