Mobilizing Funds for Black and Trans-Led DC Orgs

Donation protected
Over the past month, we have seen ongoing protests demanding justice for Black lives across the country. Police violence continues killing Black folks while the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disproportionately impact Black and Brown communities. And on top of that, the Trump administration has decided to strip transgender folks of healthcare protections, making it legal for healthcare providers to discriminate and refuse services to transgender individuals. State violence, racial health disparities, and discrimination against the transgender community are not new, and neither are the organizing efforts to demand change within our country’s very broken systems.

As young people working in the DMV social justice sphere, we understand that it can be difficult to know how to help when so many things are happening at once, but now is not the time to sit back and remain silent. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Nina Pop, Ahmaud Arbery and so many other Black folks’ lives were ended too soon, and refusing to act means being complicit. Violence against Black trans folks, especially, must be centered in our efforts to fight for justice. Therefore, we are emailing today to ask for your support in fundraising for Black and trans-led organizations in DC. We are focusing specifically on the organizations listed below to leverage places with financial needs that are working to impact much-needed change in the DMV community.

These organizations include:

Stop Police Terror Project DC
ONE DC
Black Lives Matter DMV
No Justice No Pride
Free Black Mamas DMV
CasaBITS
Casa Ruby
Empower DC

There are currently eight DC corps members remaining in our houses, and we had been thinking of ways to involve the greater community in our efforts to stand in solidarity with BIPOC and queer and trans communities. And while we know economic support is not the only way to do so, as a majority-white population with class privilege, it is on us as alumni, corps members, and supporters to not just take action on the streets and in our homes, but with our wallets, as well. If you are already donating to local bail funds and Black and trans-led organizations in your area, please continue to do so! We do not want to divert funds from crucial projects; we simply want to offer an opportunity for folks who may not know where to donate to have their money used at a neighborhood/city level.

We appreciate you supporting our efforts, and we encourage you to continue protesting, getting involved in your local anti-racist organizations, calling elected officials, reading new books, and having difficult conversations with your family and friends. We must all continue to fight against white supremacy, transphobia, and all systems of oppression in America. If you have any questions or are curious about our favorite Black-owned restaurants to support in DC, please feel free to reach out to us!

In Solidarity,
