Mobility Scooter for Carol

Donation protected

My mom, Carol, has struggled with her breathing ever since she had Hodgkins disease nearly 30 years ago. The radiation that saved her life has resulted in irreversible lung disease. As her doctors say, she is now suffering the consequences of surviving cancer. In January 2017, she went to the ER with breathing problems and never really recovered. She was never able to return to the job she loved at the Academy of the New Church Boys School and has filed for disability.

If you know my mom, you know that she loves being useful. It has been so painful to watch her go so suddenly from working full time to struggling to catch her breath when doing simple household chores. Her quality of life has diminished considerably and that's why I've started this Go Fund Me campaign.

At this point, Mom needs a wheelchair to go to church and only on her best days can she handle grocery shopping with a cart to lean on. We recently went to Target together and she was thrilled to find how much more she could manage with an electric shopping cart. She needs to rest so much these days and misses being able to go on walks and day trips with those she loves most.

Mom would benefit greatly from owning an electric mobility scooter. Unfortunately, insurance won't cover even a part of the cost unless Mom is unable to get around her own home unassisted. I for one don't want to wait for things to get that bad before she gets this much deserved freedom.

This campaign is an early Christmas present for my parents. The goal was originally to raise $2500 to help my parents purchase an electric mobility scooter and extra battery by December 25, 2017. Thanks to an overwhelming and speedy influx of support, we have far exceeded that goal and can start the process of getting my mom her scooter far before Christmas. She might even get to enjoy Christmas shopping now!

Any donations above and beyond the goal will be used for added expenses that will come with mom using a scooter regularly such as a lift for the car and/or a hitch and trailer for transport and possibly some ramps for the house. If there happens to be extra funds, they will be used to help cover Mom's medical expenses and to help improve her quality of life however we can. She deserves it.

The unfortunate reality is that my mom's health is only going to get worse. It would mean the world to her to be able to enjoy outings with her loved ones and run errands without completely tiring herself out. She has always been such a selfless and useful person. She is incredibly grateful for all of the support people like you have given her and my dad. The gift of a little extra independence would be so special.

Thank you for all of the ways you have already helped my parents through this difficult time and thank you for considering donating to this campaign. You are all such blessings in my mom's life.
