Mobility Access for Wally

Donation protected
"Wally," John W. Davis (my spouse) was diagnosed near the beginning of 2018 with prostate cancer, which had metastacized to his bones. He underwent radiation therapy and several bouts of chemotherapy and it looked as though, for a while, that he was responding to treatment. He was even able to go back to work for several months in 2019 at Kroger, where he is a long time, valued employee.

Starting in August, his PSA counts started to go up, and subsequent treatments have done little to arrest the progress of the cancer, which now affects the bones in all of his limbs, as well as his chest area. He is in the late stages (IV) of cancer and is still able to walk with a walker or cane for short distances.

However, information from his oncologist is that most people with cancer at the stage he has it are already wheelchair-bound. Much as we hope that that will not happen for some time, we need to be prepared for this to occur at any time.

Most or all of our available funds and income have been depleted due to medical bills not covered by insurance and by myself having to take time off from my part-time position to take him to various treatments and appointments.

We now anticipate the urgent need to install a wheelchair ramp from the front door of our home (which has multiple steps to a porch where the entry door is) so that when he is confined to a wheelchair, he can be moved in and out of our house. (The back entrance is even more daunting, involving several flights of 12" steep stairs). We are in no position to move to a more convenient location, nor am I in sufficient health to manage to move him up and down stairs in a chair.

In addition to an actual ramp (which the most recent estimate is in excess of $2500), we will probably need assistance with the mobility device/wheelchair itself as insurance will not likely pay for the entirety of the cost of a suitably appointed and comfortable chair.

Any advice on construction, on building permits and things of that nature would also be greatly appreciated. Anyone can feel free to contact either John or myself (Trice) at any time.

We appreciate any assistance/donations to the Gofundme page of any amount that anyone wishes to provide. Many who know John, will remember what an extremely honest and extremely hard working person he has always been. Those same folks will also be glad to know that John remains very positive in attitude and still has his quirky sense of humor.

Thanks again for your help. . .
