It's that time again January 1-9, 2019!! It's our annual medical mission to Southern Honduras. I will be working along side with healthcare professionals from across the United States. We will be joined by a team of medical professionals, technicians and nurse to help the people of San Lorenzo. What we do... Last year our team performed 250 eye surgeries in just 5 days! MY JOB is assisting my surgeons in cataract surgery! For so many of us here in the U.S. this is a routine procedure done with the help of anesthesia and covered by insurance!! However, for many of the people of San Lorenzo, this is not routine, nor is it affordable. And we have no Anesthesia! How we do it.. We put together a mash unit creating an operating room setting and put our best surgical skills to use! For some Dr.s and techs like myself this technique of cataract surgery can be challenging when compared to today's surgical practice. With a prayer and an injection our patients are on their way to the Operating room. For those who dont know what a cataract is.. in simple terms, the hardening of the natural lens we are born with. Over time and sun damage the lens hardens and becomes impossible to see through. Our team of skilled eye surgeons remove this lens and replace it with an artificial lens, giving back sight !!!!! Many of these patients must rely on the help of others to get through everyday tasks because of their poor vision. So you can see why this is a HUGE DEAL!
