MIZPAH MINISTRIES: No starving on Christmas!

NO STARVING DURING CHRISTMAS!

That is the slogan of MIZPAH MINISTRIES in India, run by Rev. Saji Baby.

During this Christmas, the ministry would like to support 150 families who are really in need. There are families going through hardship without a source of income and they are starving.

Each families will get rice and food grains. The budget is Rs 1000 each. ( approx $17 CAD). Total budget goal is Rs. 150000 (approx $2500 CAD).

A little more about the ministry:

Mizpah Ministries is a Christian charity looking after mentally disabled children and youth in Southern India. They provide schooling, vocational training, medical and other support, in a culture where the mentally disabled are not accepted, and help for them is limited. Mizpah is based in Kayamkulam, in the State of Kerala, on the south-eastern coast of India.

The ministry is run by Rev. Saji Baby, a lecturer at the regional Evangelical seminary. He began the ministry approximately 20 years ago, after both of his daughters were diagnosed with mental illness, in an environment that had no respect and very little support for the mentally ill.

There are 126 mentally disabled students enrolled in the school, from families that are not able to provide for them. Of these, 30 are kept in a hostel attached to the school, for 24-hour care. These are the ones whose conditions are such that their families are not able to provide the continuous care that they need at home.

The school has a staff of 28, including 5 who provide continuous care at the hostel.

Mizpah tries to provide an atmosphere that is as normal as possible for the students. Therefore they celebrate Christmas and all the standard cultural events.

Mizpah also assists needy families in the community, distributing food and other necessities in times of crisis, such as the annual floods of the rainy season. They also distribute food and other necessities at Christmas.

Government funding for the school is limited. Mizpah could not continue without charitable donations from people who care. That includes all the staff; they have displayed dedication, to the extent that they work for approximately half the salary they could earn elsewhere.
