Mixti Cox Medical Other Bills

Mixti Cox is a longtime friend of our family. We grew up together and she graduated with my sister and brother from Auburn High. She has always been such a dear friend to anyone and everyone. This may sound cliche, but what little she has (wish is very little) if you need it....she would give it you without hesitation. Mixti worked at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University as a Vet Tech for a number of years, until her health got the best of her. She has numerous medical issues, one serious issue was when she had to have one of her legs amputated.  At this point, she is having difficulty taking care of things that we take for granted: cleaning house, cooking, having enough food in the house to cook and getting in and out of the bed. She has a wheelchair, which if anyone else saw it, would think, “why can’t she get another one from medicare?” Well, they only provide one every 5 years! What if the person uses it so much that it doesn’t last 5 years?! That person is out of luck.

Besides activities of daily living, medical bills are piling up, utility bills keep coming, along with vet bills for her furbabies. Her income is - poverty level.

She has 3 dogs that also have vet bills. One may wonder, why have dogs if you cannot take care of yourself? Think about it this way. When you are single, have no one in your life to rely on for any type of support or love - having furbabies is the next best thing! Any animal lover will tell you this! Mixti does not have any family, no parents, siblings or relatives - she is here totally by herself. Having furbabies, they offer so much, unconditional love, support - they can tell when you are having a bad day and they will be there right next to you, where some people would turn their back on you, they can even help with depression! Yes! This is so true - and it has been documented in medical journals.

During this past hurricane/storm, she had to board her babies. This bill alone was ½ her monthly income! Now how does she buy food or even pay her bills? If that is not enough, she has an upcoming back surgery.

She also has an older vehicle large enough for her to carry her furbabies that is missing the rear window and the driver side window. The car has no air, heat or defrost! I painstakingly watched her get into the car - her wheelchair is lower than the car and she has to struggle to pull herself in the driver seat. Her “good” leg is not strong enough to help push her (reason for back surgery), she mostly uses what upper body strength she has to get in. Because of the lack of windows, the stench in the car is unbelievable. (She has gotten accustom to it). If anyone else saw this car, they would say it needs to go to the junk yard. If only we could help her with the car to get it properly repaired, functioning and cleaned. Or even better, help her with some type of chair lift to get her get into the car or a new/used vehicle that is already equipped for a wheelchair bound individual that carries her support family with her.

My friends, she needs assistance on practically every level. Please help me show her that there are still people out there that care about their fellow human beings.
