Mitch's Fight Against Leukemia

Mitch Reid is a 16 year old, local boy to Dunsborough that was ready to complete his final term of year 11 and was excited about planning his summer holidays. He never expected to be rushed to Perth with a life threatening disease. Mitch's and his Family's life has been turned upside down and now he needs some help.

 

On 11th October 2021 Mitch (16 years old) was having some trouble swallowing due to a lump on his neck, so his mum (Melissa) took him to the doctors where some blood tests were taken to find out that he had cancer cells present and a suspected tumor was growing and pushing against his esophagus.

 

Mitch was quickly taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital for further testing where he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This type of Leukemia is quick growing and very aggressive. He has already begun intensive chemotherapy which has taken a toll on his young body. The treatment plan at this stage is a minimum of 4 more weeks in hospital where Melissa has a mattress on the floor of his room. He will then hopefully be able to move to a place near the hospital to undergo 9 more months of intensive chemotherapy at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth.

 

The Reid family needs your help, the road to recovery will be long and tough for Mitch and his whole family. He has been told that he needs to stay in Perth for the whole 9 month treatment plan as that is the only place that does this sort of intensive treatment. This requires Mel to relocate to Perth to be his full time carer and leaves her other 2 young children, Charlie and Jimmy, down in Dunsborough in the family home with relatives. The hope is to keep the other kids together in the family home so that they can stay in the community that will support them through this trying time.

 

Mel is a single mum of three, so for her to take the necessary time to be with her son to get him through this incredibly hard time will be of a huge financial burden. We hope to raise enough money to ease that burden for her and the family. The funds raised will go towards any extra medical bills for Mitch as well as living expenses such as, rent in Dunsborough and Perth, food, fuel, bills, schooling etc. The whole Reid Family are the most generous and kind people we have come across- Mel would give her last dollar or moment of time to help anyone out and now she's the one that needs the help.
