Mission Batey - House Building

This all started with a study abroad trip through my Community College in June 2017. I spent a month in the Dominican Republic and was introduced to what's known as a batey. A batey is a type of community that houses immigrant workers from Haiti, who work on sugar plantations, harvesting sugar cane. These workers are exploited. They're worked long hours, and paid close to nothing. What's more, in the past 2 decades, the Dominican government has been burning down, and removing the cane fields, eliminating these immigrants source of income. The Dominican Government denies the Haitian workers a path to citizenship, and as punishment for fleeing their country, they lose their Haitian citizenship as well. They're often referred to as "The forgotten people."
Together with my friend Clarens Descorias, a Dominican Resident, we're collecting funds to Benefit Batey Baraguana. A batey near Imbert, in the northern Dominican Republic. As seen in the video above, the residents of this batey live in small houses in a state of decay. The funds will be used in two ways. One: to pay a local contractor by the name of Oche José. He's a resident of Barrio Perez, the neighborhood next to Batey Baraguana, and will help us in leading the construction project. Two: to purchase wood, screws, wood stain, metal sheets, concrete blocks, wood doors, locking doorknobs, as well as various other additions, such as curtains, window fixtures, or solar powered lanterns (should the budget allow) from a ferratería, (hardware supply store) In Santiago De Los Caballeros. A major city, an hour out from the batey, where Clarens and I are based. Many of the batey residents have looked towards construction jobs in the major cities as an alternative source of income after the loss of the cane fields. As a result, many of them are knowledgeable in the field of construction and structural design and will be joining the effort to construct the houses.
The time frame for the project is dependent on how quickly the money is raised, but the sooner the better. Ideally, I can be in Santiago, to meet up with Clarens, and our contractor to begin construction by early September 2018.
Additional funds raised passed our asking goal will be used to purchase and deliver building supplies to the mother of my project partner Clarens. Named Sylvanie Descorias, she lives 2 hours across the Haitian border in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. More details on that will be posted here, should we surpass our goal.
