Obituary
Mirjam Eeva Cascione, affectionately known to her immediate family as äiti, resident of St. Clair Shores, died peacefully September 9, 2023, with her husband of 18 years at her side. She succumbed to a two-year struggle with cancer, and now has received the crown of victory through faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We wish to thank Ascension, Univ. of Mich., and Karmanos hospitals for providing excellent care, which helped extend her life by two years, along with Accent Care hospice at Harper Grace Hospital for the comfort they gave her in final days.
Mirjam was born on August 3, 1975, in Espoo, Finland. She was the daughter of Thomas and Riitta (Heiskanen) Toepfer, and was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in her native Finland. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg State University of Kansas. She enjoyed working with children and put her passion to work, first as a early education specialist and for the past ten years as a homeschool teacher.
She was united in marriage to her husband, Jerome Edward Cascione, on August 18, 2005, in Tuusula, Finland. They were blessed with three children: Michael, Saara, and Jonas. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and crafting.
Mirjam is survived by her husband and their three children, her parents Thomas Toepfer and Riitta Toepfer, and her two brothers Eljas (Satu) Toepfer and Johannes (Katja) Toepfer.
Visitation will be held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Eastpointe at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 16, followed by a worship service at 11:00 AM conducted by Rev. Douglas Adams.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are being accepted for the Christian education of Mirjam's children. We are thankful for all the help and support we have received from our church families at St. Paul and St. Peter's Lutheran Churches, as well as the Enrich homeschool cooperative network.
