This year, my once vibrant, energetic and active mother Yuly was the victim of a brutal and horrific attempted murder that has left her unable to care for herself. Sadly, I witnessed her bleeding out on the ground with multiple close range bullet holes in her body while our dog Coco attempted nervously to get her up.
My mother wasn’t attacked by just anyone, her x- boyfriend was a Sheriff Deputy, who instead of protecting her, set out to kill her and then himself -- thankfully he only succeeded in taking one of the two lives he intended to that day. She is a miracle of God! She is my angel!
My mother was shot 4 times at very close range, with a police issued weapon made to burst on impact. She has lost body organs, including half of her right lung, breast, her right hand is paralyzed and she suffers from SEVERE PTSD. My mother still has fragments of bullets in her body, and has to take a large amount of medications daily to manage the nerve damage and pain.
Horrifically, my once self-reliant, successful mother who worked in the finance industry has lost her job, and been unable to work. I’m a new college student and we have NO source of income and struggle greatly day by day, our medical bills alone are astronomical and impossible to keep up with. Simple things like cable are now a luxury.
Our whole world has completely been shaken up, the weeks where we didn’t know if my mother would make it were agonizing, seeing her in a coma made me feel things I hope no one ever has to feel in their lifetime. My elderly grandmother had to fly in from Peru on her birthday to find her daughter laying almost lifelessly and unresponsive in a trauma unit. Whats even sadder is that this horrific incident could have been prevented if someone would have listened to my mothers cries for help.
I feel both me and my mother died on that tragic day, and we are sure we will never be the same, but we will try our best to lead with love and not fear as we move forward.
