Miracle For Meila

Donation protected
Sweet little Meila was born on August 11, 2014 to Terry and Breanne Franks. Meila appeared to be a healthy baby girl until they brought her home and she could not maintain her temperature, became lethargic and had failure to thrive. We have been in the hospital with Meila for one month and finally have a diagnosis of MMA with Homocysteinuria. This is an inborn error of metabolism which means that Meila cannot break down proteins or fats. She will be on a special diet and vitamin B12 shots daily the rest of her life. MMA is a toxic acid to the brain. Meila has had this acid around her brain for four weeks untreated. One way they described MMA, was to think about when someone drinks to much alcohol and they pass out. Their brain is affected by the alcohol and until it gets out of your system, you feel awful. The same is true with MMA. It is toxic and the high levels that she has is what is making her so lethargic, making her temperature low and is the reason her muscle tone is poor.
This will be a life long disease and journey for Meila. MMA is a metabolic disorder and is very convoluted and hard to control. They must always be on guard with Meila to make sure she is clinically stable. She cannot be around sick people if at all possible because sick babies with this disorder cannot handle illness well. Any disturbance in their metabolic state could cause metabolic crisis which could lead to death.
I, along with Terry and Breanne's family, wanted to set up this site because so many people have asked to help them, which we have been so grateful for- but to be honest, Terry and Breanne did not think they would need help. They truly thought they would be in the hospital a few days and then home with their healthy baby girl. Now that Meila has been in the hospital for over a month and has a diagnosis- the hospital, hotels, and medication costs have started to accrue and we realize that this diagnosis is not going anywhere. As their family, we want to relieve them of any financial burdens. Terry and Breanne have set up a separate medical account for Meila's expenses, not only for the last 30 days in the hospital, but for what lies ahead. If you feel led to give, we thank you- but please pray first- prayers are more important than anything to us.
