The Miracle League of New Castle Optimist, is a baseball league that gives children age 3 to adults of any age, that have cognitive and physical disabilities the chance to play baseball.
Our current fields are not handicapped accessible in many ways. There is soft field dirt, gravel, grass and not level playing surfaces. For a person with a walker, in a wheelchair, has a cane, crutches, or even braces, these fields have a lot of barriers. Our league needs to be barrier free so our players can have the most amazing experience ever. The other issues are the restroom facilities. We use port a potty. These are in no way easy for even general people, let alone someone in a wheelchair. We have many players that have to be laid down to have their incontinence issues taken care of. This could never happen in a port a potty. Many parents have had to take their child to their car to change them or leave in the middle of a game. Our last issue is our concession stand. This stand built in the 70’s is not in good shape. We have added band aids to be able to use it like we do now. With no running water and a leaking roof, we do what we can. On Saturday, September 1st, we found out our little stand was broken into. This has been devastating to many of our players. They see this as an attack on them personally. Our stand is a great source of income for us during our season. It helps provided money for trophies and other items for our players. Our league is a not a pay to play league. Many of our players do not have extra funds to be able to play. The extra money helps offset that. Our goal is to build an amazing new facility for our players. These ball fields would be a state of the art facility. The restrooms would all be accessible, there would be a place for parents to lay their child, no matter the size, down to change them. The concession stand would be large and would be accessible, so we can have players come in and help with the stand. The fields would be turf, level and free of any barriers that would keep a player from experiencing the best game ever. We would also add a totally accessible, all inclusive playground for all to have fun on. This facility would be for these amazing players to call home. It would be just for them. Our players deserve to have a place to call their own. We hope and pray you will find lead to make a donation to help us build this facility for these players. We are a non profit organization that is part of the Optimist Organization. Please know, that no one is paid that helps out with this amazing league 100% of what we receive will go towards the building fund. Thank you for your donation in advance.
