Mara Duran was diagnosed with Myelofibrosis at the young age of 16 and for a young girl such as herself she's braved a lot of procedures to defy the Doctor's prognosis that she only has 3-5 years to live.
In December of 2020, Mara spent her birthday and Christmas in the hospital for bone marrow aspiration and biopsy to check if her disease is progressing. As her veins and arteries are collapsing intravenous therapy was necessary to fasten the effects of the medications to her system. Transesophageal Electrocardiography procedure was also made to check the functioning of her heart. Tubes connected to veins to fight off bacteria, NGT for her nourishment and intubation to help her with her breathing. These are just some of the procedures she had to go thru.
Currently the family is seeking blood donors for Mara. And family and friends are raising funds to pay for medical expenses at the National Kidney Institute in the Philippines.
Mara, before being hospitalized in December was already producing her own blood and was determined to challenge the medically-calculated life span. Her bone marrow has withstood the reticulin fibrosis in it and has been creating a decent amount of healthy blood cells. Her platelet count is below average, but enough to prevent uncontrolled bleeding. Other blood components are all stable and within range.
"No birthday of mine should ever be complete without thanking you all for your support. Thank you for keeping me sane, for reminding me how much I am loved, and for inspiring me to live the life beyond the limits of having cancer. It is not meant to shackle me from pursuing the things I have once dreamed of. I sometimes think I am blessed way more than I deserve." quoting Mara's FB post.
